ASAC Fellows

ASAC is pleased to announce the introduction of its “ASAC Fellows” program, a networking and mentoring initiative intended to showcase and engage distinguished Canadian scholars in helping early career researchers, especially doctoral students, in developing their career and research profile. ASAC Fellows are ASAC members with a distinguished record in research. They are appointed by the ASAC Board for three years and are eligible for re-appointment for another three years.

Under normal circumstances ASAC Fellows are expected to be active members of ASAC with a distinguished record in research, contributing to activities such as the annual conference, member events, chairing divisional sessions and organising symposiums. Current Fellows:

Robert Anderson, Professor Emeritus, University of Regina                  

Robert Anderson is an internationally recognized scholar on entrepreneurship and sustainable development with a focus on Indigenous peoples around the world. He has argued that developmental aspirations of Indigenous people are shaped by four key factors: (i) a desire by Indigenous people to improve their socio-economic circumstances through participation in the global economy ‘on their own terms’, (ii) increasing recognition of the rights of Indigenous people to have at least some control over activities on their traditional lands, (iii) the shift to a new, flexible global economy in which local aspirations and objectives can play a more significant role and iv) the growing importance of entrepreneurship as a means for achieving these objectives that are well aligned with an emerging global trend of sustainability, and ‘blended value’ enterprises. In the last 20 years, he has held numerous SSHRC and other grants. These grants have facilitated international research networks to research Indigenous People and Sustainable Development in the Global Economy. This funding has also played a large part in the publication of more than 50 peer reviewed journal papers and 120 peer-reviewed conference papers along with four books, and 20 book chapters. Bob is a Past President of the Administrative Sciences Association of Canada and a Past President of the Canadian Council for Small Business and Entrepreneurship. He also served as a Senior Vice President of the International Council for Small Business.

Shamsud Chowdhury, Professor, Rowe School of Business, Dalhousie University

Shamsud Chowdhury has been an active and longstanding supporter of ASAC for the last 28 years. He served ASAC in many different capacities which include, academic reviewer, program chair, and division chair for Strategy in 1994, 1995, and 1996, respectively; ASAC board member in 1996 and 2014; All ASAC Conference Program Chair in 2008; and the Coordinator of the ASAC Doctoral Consortium in 2008. Besides, Shamsud served on the Best Paper Selection Committee for the Strategy Division six times. He served on the CJAS Best Paper Selection Committee in 2002 and 2003.Shamsud also served on the Douglas Mackay Outstanding Paper Selection Committee in 2002 and 2003. He was a member of the CJAS editorial boardfrom 1997 to 2005, and then again returned to the board in 2014 for a three year-term. Shamsud won the Best Paper Award of the Strategy Division in1992, 1998, and in 2016. Therefore, Shamsud appears to be inseparable from ASAC which, in addition to the above service contributions, his unique attendance record—24 over a period of 28—at its annual conferencessupports.

Shamsud’s research generated presentations in scores of conferences in North America and overseas, and appeared in journals such as, Business Horizons, Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences, Journal of Business Research, International Journal of Human Resource Management, Journal of Management, Journal ofManagement Studies, and Long Range Planning. Over the years, Shamsud has held visiting appointments at Riga Technical University (Latvia), Helsinki School of Economics (Finland), Warsaw School of Economics (Poland), ESSEC Business School (France), and Bielefeld University (Germany).

Shamsud has played key roles in different types of important workshops in Argentina, Canada, and the U.S. Because of his extensive network with colleagues in North America, Europe, and Asia, Shamsud has helped—directly and indirectly—young academics in Canada in terms of career advice, publication, and networking. His efforts have contributed to the reputation of ASAC and CJAS and have inspired young academics to get actively involved in them.

Albert Mills, Professor, Sobey School of Business, Saint Mary's University

Albert J. Mills is Professor of Management at Saint Mary’s University and Professor [02] of Innovation at the University of Eastern Finland (Kuopio). He was Director of the Sobey PhD (Management) program from 2003 to 2018.

Albert attended his first ASAC conference in 1987 (Hamilton, Ont.), presenting a paper on `Organizational Acculturation and Gender Discrimination’. He is particularly proud of his ASAC Best Paper Awards, including `Organizational analysis goes to the movies: inserting humanities into the management curriculum’ (with Peter Chiaramonte, 1996: Innovation in Teaching track); `Equality and Gender Change Strategies in Mexico’ (with Salvador Barragan, 2013, GDO); `The British Airways Heritage Collection: An Ethnographic History’ with Kristine Coller and Jean Helms Mills (2015, BH);  and `A Spectacle of Otherness: An Autoethnography of a Conference Presentation’ with Leila Jamjoom (2018, GDO).

Albert served on the ASAC Executive from 1999 to 2009 as Vice-President Communications, President, and Conference Chair. He helped to establish the CMS Area of the Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences (CJAS), serving as area editor (2007-2011). He also co-edited two Special Issues of CJAS and published eight articles. At the 2009 Niagara Falls conference he was awarded the first ever Honorary Life Time Membership award.

Albert has served on the Boards of the Standing Conference on Organizational Symbolism (SCOS) and the International Federation of Scholarly Associations of Management (IFSAM). He has also served as Co-President of the Atlantic Schools of Business; Co-Chair of the Critical Management Studies Division of the Academy of Management; and Co-Chair of the International Board for Critical Management Studies.

His main research interests are gender and diversity; management and organizational history; Canadian management theory; and business research methods – contributing to the development of ANTi-History, Critical Sensemaking and the Sociology of Management Knowledge (with Kristene Coller, Gabrielle Durepos, Jean Helms Mills, Trish McLaren, Amy Thurlow, and Terry Weatherbee). These research interests are peppered throughout his forty-five books and edited collections; and 200 or so chapters and scholarly journals.
